RonJohn is correct. I was one of the early adopters of broadband when cable internet came to my area in 1997. I paid $50 (US) per month for it, and I distinctly remember that they offered a second IP address for an additional $20 per month. Even though I wanted one, I wasn't willing to pay for it. The following year, my problem was solved when I discovered NAT devices. They didn't have many features (such as port-forwarding for incoming connections) but the one I got solved my immediate need.
